Meet your calligrapher
I’m not only here to make things look pretty. I’m most excited about getting to know you and your story. By the end of this process, I hope it feels like you’ve gained a friend & go-to calligrapher through all seasons of life!
Hello there! I’m Alex! A Kansas City born and bred calligraphy and wedding signage artist. I first learned about calligraphy, and got my first try at it, from my mom. In grade school, I would watch her pen St. Peter’s 8th grade graduation certificates each year and found it mesmerizing. It wasn’t until after my college goalkeeping career was over that my hands itched to do something different. That’s when I took up lettering more seriously before officially launching Pen Oak Calligraphy & Design in 2020.
I now reside in South Kansas City with my husband, Dalton, and our daughter, Elana. When I’m not lettering, you can find me searching for the next hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, antiquing across town, eating copious amounts of Mediterranean or Greek food, finding the next hidden nature spot to explore, doing something with our small group from church, or trying to convince my husband that we can fit another mirror in our home for the rental inventory.
About Pen Oak
Pen Oak is a nod to the pin oak tree. In 4th or 5th grade, I planted a pin oak in the front yard of my childhood home at 6130 Oak Street (fun fact: the leaf in my logo is from that very tree). Years later, I drove by that house, saw that tree, and God prompted me to look up Isaiah 61:3. The end of the verse reads “They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.” The whole reason my business exists is because God gave me this gift and my hope is to use it to bless people for the display of His splendor.
